Why does Hamish have a black eye?

Well originally Hamish wanted to be a pirate, then he found the goggles and tail and *tadah* dodgy looking construction worker, with a tail.
Actually, now I look at it, I can see the "string" from the eyepatch, but at first sight I was wondering why he wanted to look like he'd been punched in the face.
