Business What Business?

I had my second client a few weeks ago and I'm pleased to say she was really happy with the job I did.  One of the unexpected things that happened due to the fact that she was pleased is that she has recommended me to some of her friends.

Now from a business side of things that's great the problem is that the business side of things are far from organised.   I don't have a business name or any sort of business identity, I have an ideology and a plan but its all moving faster than I expected.

I had no plans to look for my training births yet, I felt that I was going to slowly do my course until January next year and then maybe I would start looking to find some woman willing to have me at their birth.  As it stands today I have completed the hardest part of my course (the births) and just have the reading and writing components left.  As far as having a business goes.

So creative beautiful blog reading people, I'm calling out for help with name ideas, I want the name to encompass me and what I believe in in relation to pregnancy and birth (ie natural normal healthy)

Once I have your ideas I will put them in with mine and hopefully figure out a name I think is right for both the Doula and Childbirth Education components

Then after I have all of that set up and organised I had better endeavor to complete the course :)

Well, I'm not sure I have any useful ideas, but Aboriginal mythology gives some lovely names, if you don't mind co-opting ideas from a different culture: there's Bunbulama, goddess of the rain (I'm not sure for which tribe, or whether it was more general) who, along with other goddesses, brought forth the first sacred artefacts. Or there's Eingana--that's a lovely name--who brought forth water, land, and animals. That gives you nice room to move, especially in logo design. She's also associated with death, though.

(Again, this is a fairly general account--I can't speak to its accuracy.)

But there are birth myths in all cultures. There'll be some interesting ideas in Ovid (but all I can think of now is Hecuba--wife of Priam of Troy, whose children died in the war--and Niobe--who wept to such an extent that she metamorphosed into a statue, after her children were killed by jealous gods--so they aren't helpful.) Some of them, like Hathor the Egyptian god, will be taken, but it's a rich area.

I'll think some more.

I actually think something about your online profile name would be good.

Willow Women, Willow Womb, Birth Tree, Dancing Willow, Willow Tree Birth,

I just like the symbol of how the tree is fluid movement and can bend and stretch and flow under extreme pressure, without breaking. It moves with the wind and the river and easily moves its roots into the earth. It becomes one with its enviroment, is strong and bold. Is wise and gentle.

Add with that a tree being a circle of life, seeds, growth, stregth and resiliance... I think it is wonderful...

(and I can see a great logo for it! haha!)

If there are any names on my mamaluna page that you like feel free to take the name (and the logo if you want!)

It took me 18 months before I was 150% happy with Mamaluna...

Yep, I saw the Hathor the Cow Goddess link on your page, that's how I knew that one was taken (I'd never have come across the page otherwise!). Actually, I was quite pleased to see the link, since I'd always though Hathor had the head of a hippopotamus--the cartoons are therefore educational as well!

I'm sure I can think of more, but they'd almost all be classical, which may not be what you're looking for.

Nick would be happy to do some logo design for you, though, if you come up with an idea.

And Kristie's idea of a continuing tree motif is a good one--it would help solidify your various web presences, as well, if you want that.

Actually, now I think about it--if you want to keep your blog as a separate identity from your business webpage (and you may want to do that or you may not), I wouldn't use Willow. (If you want to link the blog and the business webpage in people's minds, Willow makes a good continuing motif.)

But even if you don't use Willow, there are plenty of trees you could draw on to still keep those kind of associations that Kristie is drawing out. And for most trees, there's some kind of associated treelore, which might give some interesting ideas.

So aspen poplars have a sad, sad legend behind them, but oaks, for example, are reputed to be strong and sturdy: they're often given masculine associations ("heart of oak are our ships," and so on) but they're also often used as a symbol for the faithful lover in Renaissance verse.

And so on.

That might be another path to look into. And flowers have their own lore, too. Or--I've just had this idea--herblore, which has a strong association with the old wisewomen who were the first midwives and who were pushed out (and often burnt as witches) when medicine became professional (and therefore, in that period, inherently a male domain). Herblore would tie in with a lot of your specific concerns about birthing and has some beautiful imagery associated with it.

(Of course, this may make no sense, since I've had four classes today and am only semi-conscious.)
